How to Beat Procrastination & Build a Productive Life with Eric Twiggs | Bartelle's Money Talk

Bartelle’s Financial Coaching is led by Theresa Bartelle

“Don’t let perfect be the enemy of progress.”Eric M. Twiggs

We’ve all been there—an idea in our head, a dream on our heart, a goal in our planner—and yet, it sits. Days go by. Then weeks. You’re overwhelmed, unsure where to begin, or paralyzed by fear that it won’t be good enough. That’s procrastination.

In this episode of Bartelle’s Money Talk, we were joined by Eric Twiggs, an expert in procrastination prevention, host of The 30 Minute Hour Podcast, and author of the acclaimed book The Discipline of Now: 12 Practical Principles to Overcome Procrastination.

Eric brings decades of coaching experience and over 28,000+ sessions to the table, helping entrepreneurs, professionals, and dreamers finally do the work they’ve been avoiding—and feel confident while doing it.

🧠 The Difference Between Good and Great

Eric explained that the difference between high performers and average ones isn’t intelligence—it’s discipline. High achievers do what needs to be done, even when they don’t feel like it.

“I’ve seen it over and over again,” Eric said. “The greats push through the resistance.”

This is where The Discipline of Now comes in. It’s not a 500-page theory dump. It’s a tool for real people—entrepreneurs, leaders, creatives, parents—who want to stop overthinking and start acting.

🗺️ The Procrastination Prevention Pyramid

Eric’s framework consists of five levels, but he gave us a peek at the first two:

1. Attitude (Mindset)

Negativity is the default for many of us. Gratitude is a discipline. Eric encourages journaling daily wins and surrounding yourself with positive voices. You can’t build momentum with a defeated mindset.

“The more wins you write down, the more wins you’ll have to write down.”

2. Awareness

We all have natural rhythms. Are you a morning person or a night owl? You don’t have to wake up at 4 AM to be productive. But you do need to schedule your most important tasks during your personal “power hours.”

💥 Why Procrastination Destroys Finances

We asked Eric directly: “How does procrastination impact someone’s financial life?”

His answer? Massively.

From delaying starting a business, to missing investment opportunities, to putting off taxes, procrastination leads to financial leakage, stress, and missed growth.

It also stems from deeper issues—fear of failure, fear of success, or childhood conditioning.

🔑 The Mindset Shift You Need

Eric emphasized that mindset is the foundation. Without shifting your beliefs, you’ll stay stuck. He shared how many of his clients said things like:

“My business is different.”
“I can’t because I have kids.”
“No one’s buying right now.”

But every excuse has a counterexample. There’s someone out there succeeding in worse circumstances.

You may need a coach, accountability partner, or mastermind to help you see your blind spots and shift into a forward-thinking mindset.

📆 Bonus Technique: The Non-Negotiable Appointment

One of Eric’s most practical tips?

“Make an appointment with yourself.”

Don’t just say you’ll write the blog, build the funnel, or make the budget. Put it on your calendar like it’s a doctor’s appointment. Set reminders. Prepare your environment. Treat it as sacred.

This trick alone has helped countless entrepreneurs create consistency and momentum.

💬 Eric’s 3 Nuggets to Stop Procrastinating Today

We closed the episode by asking Eric to drop his top three pieces of wisdom. Here they are:

1. Clarity is the starting point of success.

Get clear on what you want, when you want it, and why. Vague goals lead to vague effort.

2. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of progress.

You don’t need all the answers—just the next step.

3. Ask yourself: What’s possible?

Instead of obsessing over barriers, dream about what’s possible. This expands your vision and motivates you to act.

🧰 BONUS CONTENT: 5 Questions to Journal Through Procrastination

Here are five journaling prompts inspired by Eric’s work to help you break through procrastination:

  1. What’s one win I had this week?

  2. What’s the ONE task I’m avoiding that would move me forward?

  3. What fear or belief is holding me back?

  4. When during the day do I have the most energy and focus?

  5. What would become possible if I took action today?

Try answering these before your next planning session or decision-making moment.
